Summerfest is thrilled to announce that A Company of Fools , Ottawa’s only professional outdoor Shakespeare theatre group, will be bringing their fast and furious production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to Summerfest 2010. “The Fools high-energy, physical, tongue-in-cheek approach to Shakespeare brings new light to all the pieces”,
says artistic director Scott Florence. “We’re going to have a lot of fun with this already delightful story.”
When Shakespeare set quill to parchment to write a tale of jealous fairies, mixed-up lovers and a donkey, he never imagined that six actors could perform all 22 characters in a high-energy version
drawing on the disciplines of clown, commedia del’arte, and new vaudeville. “There are only six actors so there is a lot of doubling in the cast. As well, being a Fools show, it’s intrinsically physical. It’s very physically demanding on the actors”, says Scott Florence. “It’s going to be a really magical, fun experience.” Midsummer always has a little bit of magic in the air, which makes the restless fairies want to play with the clueless mortals. Two young couples run heedlessly into the enchanted forest outside Athens where they catch the interest of the Fairy King Oberon and Queen Titania. Meanwhile, Bottom the weaver and his friends are rehearsing a play, The Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe. In a fit of jealousy, Oberon commands his servant, Puck, to give Bottom a donkey’s head, and have Titania fall head over heels at first sight of his long ears and boyish snout. Not to spoil the ending, but true love wins out, and Bottom entertains them all with his poorly-rehearsed play.
This family-friendly show is 90 minutes long with no intermission and a ticket price can’t be beat – a Summerfest wristband is all you need. The Fools will be performing at a new location, on the grounds of the Yacht Club, at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday July 31st. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome!
Theatre Workshop: “Introduction to Clown”, presented by A Company of Fools
A Company of Fools uses clown as a tool in almost everything they do: both in the creation of new work and in performance. This “Introduction to Clown” workshop, led by Scott Florence, is for actors with none, some or a lot of clown experience - that's right, no matter what level you're at, Scott will lead you on a personal journey to find and develop your inner clown! Take your performance to the next level as you explore pleasure and play, games and nonsense, and the joy of the ridiculous!
Clowns play differently than your average actor -- they have their heart on their sleeve and their inner ridiculousness on the outside. There is nothing so freeing as embracing your inner idiot. Spend some time learning to play with your heart on the outside and embracing all the strange, quirky, idiotic impulses we all have. Come to know, love and live with the idiot-genius you are within -- because to be human is to stub your toe, curse, look up to see if anyone saw, and then pretend that nothing happened.
The “Introduction to Clown” workshop will take place on Sunday August 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club. Discover and hone your clowning skills, and see if you can make a Fool of yourself!

Birds of prey are birds that hunt for food using their keen senses, especially vision. They kill
their preys using their powerful talons. Their beaks tend to be relatively large, powerful and adapted for tearing and/or piercing flesh. The term "raptor" is derived from the Latin word "rapere" which means “snatch, grab, carry off”.
Formal classification:
The diurnal birds of prey are formally classified into five families:
* Accipitridae: hawks, eagles, buzzards, harriers, kites and Old World vultures
* Pandionidae: the Osprey
* Sagittariidae: the Secretary Bird
* Falconidae: falcons and caracaras
* Cathartidae: New World vultures including condors.
The nocturnal birds of prey - the owls - are classified separately as members of two extant families of the order Strigiformes:
* Strigidae: (typical owls)
* Tytonidae: (barn and bay owls)

Though Freestyle Soccer is totally cool to do and watch, it also possesses a strong developmental aspect. This is especially true
among today's young soccer players.
Through past performances, workshops and clinics, we have observed an untold progression with kids exposed to Freestyle Soccer. Some noticeable areas of improvement we have identified are:
- Ball Control
- Dexterity (foot and eye coordination etc.)
- Balance
- Positioning
- Increased Concentration
- Flexibility and Strength
- Confidence with the ball
- Anticipation (decision making)
- Motivation and Determination
- Swiftness (speed)
These are just a few of the key areas developed through doing Freestyle Soccer. Freestyle Soccer is out to develop the skills and ball control of all soccer players around the world. Kids start playing soccer religiously as soon as they can walk, when not on the field playing, they juggle the ball to improve their skills. Freestyle Soccer puts the fun into practicing. Start by doing one keep-up, then two, then three's once you can do ten, catch the ball between your knees (KNEE GRAB), bounce the ball off your heel (HEELCAKE), then without dropping the ball, pass the ball using the back of your knee (THE POP); the tricks go on and on. It may sound or look hard but with technique and practice, it will happen.
An important thing to remember is - If you are having fun then the results will come!

Start waving your flags, Deep River: K’Naan is
coming to town! The 2010 Juno award winner of both Artist and Songwriter of the year, and current nominee for International Entertainer of the Year, will be headlining Summerfest 2010 on Sunday August 1st.
Born in Somalia and now living in Canada, K’Naan is rapidly ascending as a new star in the international music industry. Somalia: the name alone conjures up images of unbridled destruction, merciless warlords and ruthless terror. A place where no-one — children, the elderly, religious figures — is safe from the atrocities of war. A place where 8-year olds handle AK-47s like toys and childhood exists in chronological terms alone. But Somalia is also "The Nation of Poets," where a poem can both inspire peace and end wars.
Growing up, it was both of these aspects of Somalia that formed the musician K’Naan Warsame, whose sophomore album Troubadour was released on February 17, 2009. Recorded primarily in Kingston, Jamaica where K’Naan was granted unprecedented access by his friends Stephen and Damian Marley to their father Bob Marley’s original home studio and the legendary Tuff Gong studios, Troubadour is a hip-hop album like no other. K’Naan successfully blends samples and live instrumentation for a sound that’s rooted in both traditional African melodies and the classic hip-hop tradition. "I’m not interested in being mediocre," declares the rapper. "If there’s not a necessity to what I’m doing, I just wouldn’t do it. If I don’t have something to add to the conversation, I’m just not gonna talk." Luckily for us, he has plenty to say.
K’Naan’s music draws from a tremendous mix of musical genres, including reggae, funk, pop, soul and hip-hop. K’Naan has collaborated with numerous artists, including Nelly Furtado, Mos Def, Mary J Blige, Metallica, Damian Marley, Keane, will.i.am, and Wale. His hit single “Wavin’ Flag” reached number one on the Much Music Top 40 Countdown and has been selected as the anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. “Wavin’ Flag” was also chosen by Young Canadian artists as a theme song to raise public awareness for the disaster in Haiti.
So, get ready to wave your flags with K’Naan, as Deep River Summerfest is thrilled to announce that immediately following his live performances at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, K’Naan will be coming to rock the Main Stage at Summerfest 2010!

Hey Deep River, get ready to party! The Planet Smashers are coming to town! Formed in 1994 in Montreal, the Smashers’s infectious pop
infused melodies, rippin’ horn licks and killer live shows, quickly established them as the city’s “Kings of Ska”. They released their first album (“Self-Titled”) on Planet Smasher’s founder Matt Collyer’s own label STOMP Records and hit the road. By 1997 they were no longer a local band, but a national phenomenon, headlining shows across Canada and pushing their second record, “Attack of The Planet Smashers” which reached #2 on the national college radio charts for 2 months straight. Their third album “Life of The Party” took the continent by storm, and resulted in The Planet Smashers winning the Montreal Independent Music award for best ska band and attracting attention from major labels, bands, publishers and booking agents all over the world.
Although the band received much commercial attention during the ska wave, they decided to continue down the independent road with STOMP Records. Their fourth release, “No Self Control” was produced by Steven Drake (Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, The Odds etc.). "No Self Control" was also the band's first internationally released record and reached #14 on the Tower retail sales charts in Japan!
“Mighty”, the Planet Smashers’ fifth full length for STOMP Records is chock full of summertime party songs that'll get you into party gear. “Mighty” was produced/engineered by Rod Shearer (Bran Van 3000, Bionic, Corey Hart) and co-produced by The Planet Smashers (not to mention mixed on the same board as Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”!) “Mighty” is a fun and positive record that provides the perfect soundtrack to any summer BBQ.
In 2004, STOMP Records produced a commemorative DVD entitled "Ten" featuring the last 10 years of the band. The DVD includes live footage from various shows from 1994 to 2003 as well as 12 videos, 24 episodes of the Japanese animated series "Catman" (soundtrack by the Smashers), and a slew of stunts and shenanigans. Also in 2004, the Planet Smashers coincidentally did a month on the 10th year anniversary of the Vans Warped Tour.
The band returned to the studio in 2005 to record their 6th album “Unstoppable”, and marked the return of long time producer-friend Chris Murray (“Attack of the...” and “Life of the Party”). "Unstoppable" features guest appearances from Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash and Liam O’Neil of the Stills. After the album’s release in May 2005, the Smashers hit the road for over a year of non-stop touring throughout North America and Europe, including yet another appearance on the Vans Warped Tour, two runs on the Ska Is Dead Tour, and even an attempt to branch out opening up for Simple Plan's Canadian arena tour.
In terms of touring, not many indie Canadian bands come close. They have headlined countless tours in North America, 8 European tours, been included on 5 Vans Warped Tour as well as a Japanese tour in 2002.
Don’t miss The Planet Smashers live show at Deep River Summerfest, Sunday, August 1, 2010. Be prepared for a good time! For more information on The Planet Smashers, check out their website (www. stomprecords.com) or check out their songs and videos on YouTube. Don’t forget to stay tuned for the announcement of our headline band!
